Dorming Reimagined

Honestly speaking what are the benefits of dorming right now? The expectations of dorming as we know it have been dramatically altered by the reality of the pandemic. Whether a student expected to party, to grind, or even just to network; before you could list a slew of reasons why it would not be optimal to be a full-time student to commute. But from the current student standpoint it seems as if many of the negative aspects of our current experience aren’t inherently unsolvable or difficult to address. In fact many of them are prior problems exacerbated by the current situation of the world.

However no-one seems to be speaking about it…except students. When doing research for this story the only narratives I found detailing dorming was from student publications with most outlets only documenting either that students were moving in or forced to move out because of various pandemic related reasons. Sabrina Lacayo of New University details when interviewed, “Before the pandemic, she was making the most of her college experience through hanging out with her friends and attending club events. COVID-19 restrictions have put a stop to these activities.”

Her experience is not unique to just her, the world has dramatically changed and college is struggling to keep up. Students can pick and choose specific portions of their college experience and fully outline the pro’s and cons; so the question I and countless students across the globe have is “what is being done?” If we can do this, universities most certainly can and should be expected to.
